Irish Jam Session

Finally some fun things after too much work. It's more than 5 years now since I've last been to the Irish Jam Session in the Alte Schmitte in Steffisburg (which is a shoe shop, bistro and event place all in one). Again it was pure joy and happiness to listen to all this great musicians, who come spontaneously together to play and sing irish songs. I hope it won't be another 5 years till I'll be there the next time.

A lot of fun we had yesterday night, producing surrealist-like drawings. Simple game, exciting results! (The game: Fold a piece of paper into half, draw something, mark the subsequent lines on the other half of the sheet, then pass it on. The next person completes the drawing by using the marked lines from the former one without knowing whats on the other half of the paper.)

Three pictures I recently took... The colourful leaves are stunning at the moment, the yellow ones are my favourites I think, although I usually prefer red. The rising sun reflecting in the glass facade on the Basel Messe tower this morning looked amazing too. Getting up early also has it's good sides. I wonder who else has as well noticed this short glimpse of beauty. A lot of people just stare at their smartphones when on a bus or train.
The Ferris Wheel is one big romantic attraction at the traditional autumn fair.

Since a while I am in a new sketchgroup here in Bern. We meet twice a month in different places - and already the sheer regularity of this really motivates me do more sketchbook work, more drawing and more whatever. :)
This week we watched hand- and volleyballers exercising, which was really hard to draw. They never stood still, never kept a position, but still it was fun. My sketches became smaller and smaller, so I could leave out details and catch the movements better.

It seems to be really great when you need some quick information about an image. What I like too, is the simplistic structure of the site. You can search by artist or artwork with several subcategories which make it really easy. And of course, you can help develop and expand the page. I like!

Ok, this is perhaps going to be a bit of a spam post...
I still love sending (and of course, receiving) real letters. Especially nice for this purpose are the brown envelopes with that silky feel from W.H.Smith. Depending on where you live you may find them in other stationary shops too, except in Switzerland it seems, I still couldn't find any of the same kind over here.
Quite often I also decorate them with some black prints made with easy-to-use rubber stamps. The ones with the addresses are hand-cut by my friend Annik who runs a small company named Stempelmanufaktur. You may order your own rubber stamp here! (german only)

As warm and summery as the weather is, I spent a few hours in a public swimming pool nearby. Around the pool rise some low hills where you can spread your towel and chill out. But also, from there you get a nice view over the whole scenery. Only the sun made me too lazy to draw all the people in and around the pool. So abandoned, it looks quite strange.

This is a little belated post about the wonderful weekend me and Annik spent in the remote Calanca Valley in the south east of Switzerland. We did a lot of sketching and drawing to explore what's typical for the place. Some of my sketches you can see above. Then, we tried to design some sort of a logo with the ideas found, which will maybe be printed on t-shirts, which will be sold to support camps and projects in this region. A little advert here: It's an absolutely great location for holidays with friends and family!
Also, I'd like to send a big thank you for food and wine, a place to sleep, good conversation, whisky and possibly a new game addiction to Ruth and Sergio!

My friend asked me if I could help her make two wooden children characters. Here, it's quite popular to put up such characters close to the road when you have small kids. They should indicate to car drivers to slow down and pay attention to any children playing on or near the streets.
I painted the two on the left, the one on the right was made by my friend. I'm sorry, I only realised at home that I have no photos of the front of hers.
It was very fun work to do, although I'm not too happy with the result. I couldn't decide whether to paint them realistically or not and now it's some weird mixture. Also, proportions are partly wrong and hands and feet are really difficult to paint. I'd like to do a second one though and try to improve all this things.

LASSO Magazin

It's been a while since my last post... so it's time to post about my little drawing that is featured in the Basel based magazine LASSO. The main theme of the mag was "drama" or "spectacle" in a wider sense. It features texts, fotographs, drawings and paintings, all interesting things that can be printed.

Today I'm off to the awesome Fumetto Comic Festival that is on this week in Lucerne, CH. It's one of the biggest festivals around with artists from all over the world. I'm especially looking forward to the exhibition of the french artist Nine Antico, who does very nice spontaneous drawings. (Only, why do french artists never have a cool website...)

felted stones

A friend inspired me to make some felted stones myself. It was quite fun, I'd love to have a load of them all in different colours! Once finished and dry, you can store them on your room heater or stove. The real stone inside the felt retains the heat and you can use them like a little hot water bottle for your cold hands and fingers.

Today I finally got my book with the title It was dark and strangely quiet (German: Es war dunkel und merkwürdig still), created by the fabulous artist and illustrator Einar Turkowski. Amazingly, he mainly uses pencil to create those mysterious, bizarre and immensely detailed pictures. As fantastic as the drawings are, so is the story of the book.

While browsing the internet just for a bit before I'm off to a nice saturday evening's Raclette (nice Swiss dish), I found the website of London/New York/South Korea based illustrator Hye Su Lee. There are lots of lovely things and drawings on, but what I like the most is the fact that everything seems to be done so spontaneously and with joy. It's the awesome sort of artwork that makes you go and create something yourself.

I've not had a lot of time to post things recently. I'm quite busy with teaching how to paint and draw and sew and felt to little ones, which is quite fun though. Hopefully I will at least get my Christmas cards printed soon. (I received my first card today, I'm in awe how organised some people are...)
Nevertheless, here is a little post about a Danish guy who does television shows for kids and makes monsterdrawings whenever he has time for. It is a little window into a different world, made on office supplies, John Kenn says himself. I think, his drawings are absolutely adorable! I love all the details and structures and awesome characters. The drawings remind me of Tom Gauld, Edward Gorey and Hayao Miyazaki all at once!

fumetto comic competition

For anyone interested in comics, the fumetto festival held each springtime in Lucerne is a simple must go. I remember for example Tom Gauld exhibiting there a few years ago or Souther Salazar showing his inspiring work this year. Of course, there were many other amazing artists too. A unique fumetto thing is the comic competition which is open to everyone, and there are in fact a few people who made quite a career out of winning it. This year's topic is "energy" and all other details can be found here.

These are two examples of a series of new pencil drawings I'm working on. Instead of working with lines as I often do, I tried to give the shapes a more haptic feel by adding gradients. The motives itself are inspired by everyday objects. Infact, there are a lot of strange things around us if you once have an unbiased look at them.
And good times, I have so many ideas and projects to work on, I sometimes don't even know where to start or continue.

So I'm back from a few good days hiking in the southern alps. Stunning views and even nicer colours, even if they are not as bright as in summer. And the lower woods are full of chestnuts in their prickly little jackets. Me and S. collected loads of them, roasted marronies (as we call them) are a real treat in autumn.

The courgettes from my mum's garden are really delicious when pickled with herbs and pepper. The recipe takes four days but it's absolutely worth it. I'm now looking forward to the next raclette (typical Swiss meal with melted cheese, nicest when it's cold and wet outside) to have them with. And of course I made some labels for the jars again.

Es wurde fleissig gezeichnet und der Raum füllte sich immer mehr mit verschiedensten Motiven, welche interessante Bezüge nach aussen und untereinander herstellten.

Es hätten noch ein paar Besucher mehr kommen dürfen, die Atmosphäre war jedoch kreativ und gemütlich. Ein Experiment, welches Lust auf mehr machte!

Besucherinnen und Besucher der Cabane B sind an diesen zwei Tagen eingeladen, sich ebenfalls mit einer Zeichnung zu beteiligen. Sie erhalten einen Einblick in die Arbeit der Zeichnerinnen.

I just spent a few days in a very inspiring place in Germany. Thanks a lot to Johanne! We thought it would be nice to use an "old" technique: a layer of wax crayons in bright colours, then one in black on top and then you can start scratching your motives into it. I think I am going to have more fun with it!

Finally I started on some new work that is about connections and associations we automatically make when looking at a picture. How and why does an image lead to another? Which elements are important? So I'm going to make a series of such connected images and the above are more or less my first two drawings. More to follow.

I really felt the urge to create something just for fun (and because I needed a change from my current work and studying), playing around with colours and patterns - so I came up with these paper flowers. They have some sticky tape on the back to attach them anywhere you like as a little spring or easter decoration.

The artist Kseniya Simonova is drawing with bare fingers in sand that is spread on a light box. She shows us through amazingly changing and emotional pictures the occupation of Ukraine during World War II. With her performance she won the Ukraine's got talent Award.

It's ages ago I've done life drawing. So this was just for fun and contemplation. It's not only some good exercise from time to time but also, it brings into focus how beautiful daily objects - even household waste like this - could be.

Schabkarton-Illustrationen Cartoonmuseum Basel

Vom 13.2. bis zum 20.6. widmet das Cartoonmuseum Basel die Ausstellung "Kontrastprogramm" dem Medium Schabkarton. Vertreten sind zeitgenössische Künstler und Illustratoren wie Thomas Ott (CH), Licht wird aber auch auf die Geschichte des Schabkartons geworfen. Da will ich hin.

From February 2nd to June 20th the Cartoon Museum Basel dedicates an exhibition to different artists and illustrators who use scratch board as a medium. The show also includes aspects from the hundred-year history of the scratch board.

I hate the feeling when you know you have simply overworked a piece. Restart from scratch, but this time I know what I want (less colour!). And I definitely need to learn how to properly scan coloured pencil drawings. They always lose their brightness and depth.
